It is not every day that breast implants receive FDA approval! Motiva breast implants are now officially approved in the USA for safety and efficacy, joining trusted brands like Allergan Natrelle, Sientra, and Mentor on the market. Motiva implants have been used in Europe and around the world for over 14 years and they offer some key differences from other implants.

Two Motiva implant styles

Fort Worth breast augmentation specialist Dr. Emily Kirby offers two styles of Motiva implants. The SmoothSilk® Round implant maintains its shape and projection, regardless of body position, creating greater upper pole fullness while maintaining a naturally soft look and feel. The SmoothSilk Ergonomix® implant is designed to mimic the natural movement of breast tissue, shifting from a round to a teardrop shape based on how the body moves. Both implant options include Motiva’s advanced technologies and are covered by the manufacturer’s extensive warranty.

Motiva breast implant safety features

Motiva implants, developed by Establishment Labs, incorporate several innovations that set them apart from other options.

1. Proprietary surface material

Their SmoothSilk® surface is not classically smooth, but is not textured. It has a 4-micron surface, which acts most like a smooth surface. It is designed to reduce friction and bacterial attachment on the implant. In turn, this may reduce the risk of capsular contracture, a condition where scar tissue abnormally thickens and tightens around the implant. Capsular contracture can impact patient satisfaction and may require revision surgery to correct. It is the most common complication associated with breast implants.

While capsular contracture does not pose a health concern, moderate-to-severe capsular contracture distorts the appearance of the affected breast. Minimizing this risk may make Motiva implants an attractive option for patients who are concerned about this condition or for those who want to replace their implants and correct capsular contracture.

2. Blue-tinted layer to confirm integrity

Motiva implants feature BluSeal®, a blue-tinted barrier layer that helps surgeons confirm that the implant’s internal and external components are fully intact prior to placing it into the breast pocket.

3. Embedded microchip

Q Inside Safety Technology™ (QID) is an optional first-of-its-kind microchip embedded within Motiva implants so that surgeons can easily access critical implant information using a handheld scanner, even many years after the implants were placed. The QID microchip is an optional upgrade to the Motiva implant. If you are interested, you should ask your surgeon for this feature.

Motiva’s safety data

Clinical data shows that Motiva breast implants have some of the lowest complication rates in the industry. Motiva’s 3-year rates for capsular contracture, rupture, and infection are 0.5%, 0.6%, and 0.9%, respectively. Additionally, satisfaction rates among patients and surgeons are exceptionally high, with patients reporting a 97.1% satisfaction rate.

Motiva implants are ideal for preservation breast augmentation

The FDA approval of Motiva implants is timely, as more patients are opting for preservation breast augmentation, which involves placing implants subfascially, or over the chest muscle, but under a thin muscle fascia layer, preserving the natural pectoralis muscle and its attachments.

Before modern, cohesive silicone implants were available, submuscular placement (under the pectoralis chest muscle) was the best approach to hide visible implant rippling from saline implants and to help preserve a natural look and feel. Over-the-muscle placement “subglandular” implant position has historically led to a higher risk of capsular contracture. Studies have now shown that subfascial placement has a safety profile similar to submuscular placement, reducing the risk of capsular contracture compared to subglandular placement. Although submuscular placement effectively conceals most of the implant, it requires a longer recovery and the implant shape can be affected when chest muscles are activated, leading to “animation” of the implant with movement of the chest muscles. Many patients are now considering over-the-muscle (but under the fascia, “subfascial”) breast implant placement.

Preservation breast augmentation involves placing implants subfascially—over the chest muscle, but under a thin fascia muscle layer—to preserve as much of your natural tissue as possible.

Preservation breast augmentation is not a new technique, but many patients have been hesitant to consider this option if they have thinner breast tissue due to concerns about an obviously augmented look and feel. Motiva implants may be ideal for preservation breast augmentation because their highly cohesive, viscoelastic gel mimics natural breast tissue, so patients can choose over-the-muscle placements without compromising a soft feel and natural-looking results.

Video Transcript »

When we place an implant in the chest, historically we used to place the implant under the pectoralis muscle for safety reasons. What we’ve done more recently is actually gone back to an older technique above the muscle, but it is a special plane of augmentation that is actually under the fascia of the muscle. This is not sub glandular above the muscle, it’s actually called “subfascial” under the fascia. In this plane of augmentation, we find really the benefits of both planes of augmentation. We get the safety profile as if it is under the muscle, but we also have the benefit of not distorting the breast implant with the muscle itself.
